You do not need special equipment to bring Montessori ideas into your home. Many of the best Montessori activities for toddlers use everyday things you already have. The aim is simple: give your child real tasks, set up so they can do them with as little help as possible.
Start with the space
A few small changes make a big difference. Put a low shelf or basket in the living area with three or four activities on it, rather than a full toy box. Rotate them every week or two. Keep a step stool in the kitchen or bathroom so your toddler can reach the sink with you nearby. Hang a hook at their height for a bag or jacket.
Pouring
Give your toddler a small jug and a cup on a tray. Start with dry things like rice or lentils, then move to water. Spills are part of learning, so keep a small cloth nearby and show them how to wipe up. Pouring builds hand control and concentration.
Transferring
Place a bowl of large pom poms or wooden blocks next to an empty bowl, with a spoon or tongs. Your toddler moves them from one bowl to the other. As skills grow, use smaller objects and smaller tools. Always supervise closely with small items.
Food preparation
Toddlers love helping in the kitchen. They can wash fruit, peel a mandarin, tear lettuce or spread butter with a blunt knife. With close supervision, older toddlers can cut a banana with a child safe knife. These real tasks build confidence and often make children keener to try new foods.
Caring for the home
Give your child a small dustpan and brush, a cloth for wiping the table or a watering can for the plants. Matching socks from the washing basket is another favourite. These practical life tasks are at the heart of Montessori and help children feel part of the family.
Dressing
Allow extra time in the morning so your toddler can try pulling on pants, putting on shoes or pushing arms into sleeves. Choose clothes with elastic waists and simple fastenings. Step in only when they need it.
Sorting and matching
Sort buttons or blocks by colour into a muffin tin, match lids to containers, or pair picture cards. These simple games build early thinking skills.
Tips for success
Show slowly and use few words. Demonstrate the activity once, carefully, then let your child try. Offer a small number of choices. Let them repeat the activity as often as they like, as repetition is how children master a skill. Finally, resist the urge to correct every mistake. A spilled cup is information, not failure.
How this connects to childcare
In a Montessori room, toddlers do many of these same kinds of activities as part of their day. Doing them at home too helps children feel the two places connect. You can read more about how we work with young children on our About page.
Activities for babies
Even before walking, babies can enjoy simple Montessori inspired activities. Place a few safe objects in a low basket for them to explore, such as a wooden ring, a soft ball and a metal whisk. Lay a mirror at floor level so they can watch themselves move. Offer time on the floor to stretch, roll and reach.
Keep it simple
You do not need to buy special materials. A few well chosen activities, rotated regularly and kept within reach, will interest your toddler far more than a room full of toys. Follow your child’s lead. If they keep returning to one activity, that is a sign it is meeting a need.
Language and books
Montessori at home also includes talking and reading together. Name objects as your toddler handles them, describe what you are doing as you cook or tidy, and keep a small selection of books where your child can reach them. Choose books with real pictures of everyday life, which toddlers often find easier to connect with than fantasy.
Outdoor time
Take activities outside when you can. Toddlers can water plants, collect leaves, sweep a path or fill and empty buckets of sand. Outdoor tasks give room for big movements and plenty of sensory experience.
